World cup qualifying Recap: surprise wins, losses, hits & misses

The United States did not qualify for Russia 2018 world cup:

After one of the most devastating nights in the history of American soccer, the US will not be going to Russia next summer after a shock 2-1 defeat to lowly Trinidad & Tobago saw them finish fifth in Concacaf world cup qualifying.

We failed on the day. No excuses,” said U.S. coach Bruce Arena, who took responsibility for the failure to qualify. We should have walked off this field with at least a point.”

It is the first time since 1986, and that United states failed to qualify for the world cup

Lionel messi leads Argentina into world cup,

“Messi did not owe the World Cup to Argentina, but football owed the World Cup to Messi. We should help him be in the World Cup.”  Argentinian coach Jorge Sampaoli.

He gave quote to his team in the dressing room. his team were at the verge of being kicked out from the world cup.

Argentina were finalists three years ago but fell outside the four qualifying spots going into their match in Ecuador. Then the worst happened, Ecuador scored the first goal.

Just when they needed him most, Lionel Messi produced a monumental performance to drag Argentina from the brink and into the 2018 World Cup. He scored two goals in a 3-1 win against Ecuador.

The Argentina team celebrated loud and long after the final whistle, with Messi the main man leading the chants in the dressing room.

Iceland would play their first ever world cup

They made history on Monday with its 2-0 win over Kosovo to qualify for the nation’s first World Cup

The nation of just 334,000 is by far the smallest country (by population) to qualify for the World Cup, but as we saw in Euro 2016, Iceland more than made up for the small population with skill and passion.

It wouldn’t have been a true Iceland victory without the Viking Chant and the fans in Reykjavik did not disappoint. After the match, the team led the packed stadium in an incredible rendition of the chant.

Iceland were fan favorites in the Euros even before stunning England. I  Russia 2018, we are rooting for the underdogs, the first timers. Teams like Iceland.

Our Green White green flag would fly in Russia

Alex Iwobi second half winner ensured Nigeria became the first African nation to qualify for the 2018 world cup when their 1-0 home victory over Zambia on Saturdays moved them into an Unassailable lead in their group.

Presently the NFF team is shopping for high profile friendly matches for the team to play. President of the NFF, Amaju Pinnick, who was expectedly elated with the team’s qualification for the World Cup, said that the job for now was to get the Eagles ready for a credible outing, adding that the football-governing body has started consultations to ensure proper preparations.

“It’s obviously a great moment for Nigeria and we are very proud of this team, who showed tenacity, dedication, discipline and unity to get the World Cup ticket.

The world was rooting for Syria

The country’s civil war has claimed more than 300,000 lives and forced four million into the exile of refugee camps in Turkey, Iraq and Jordan. One of the national team’s goalkeepers was deemed an enemy of Bashar al-Assad’s regime and survived several assassination attempts. Another was jailed.

A talented member of the nation’s Under 16 squad was killed by a bomb a few years ago. They are low ranked as world’s number 80.

Inspite of this background they pulled a stunner at the world cup qualifiers. they drew with South Korea and Iran and defeated China, Qatar, and Uzbekistan

At this point the world was cheering them on. Unfortunately they were defeated by Australia dashing their hopes. But they made it clear, in spite of their story… they were here.

The big three would play at the world cup

Brazil’s, Portugal and more recently Argentina would be at the world cup after securing a heart trick win from Messi. That means the big three would play at the world cup.

Messi , Rolando & worlds most expensive player Neymar. Ballon d’or guys….. career on the line….

But some big names would not play :

Alexis Sanchez: Chile and Arsenal Chile suffered last-minute heartbreak as they were pushed out of a play-off place when Peru equalized against Colombia, meaning the Arsenal star will not be sprinting up the flanks for La Roja in Russia.

Gareth Bale: Wales and Real Madrid. It has been a positive few years for Wales but the Euro 2016 semi-finalists were pipped to a play-off spot by the Republic of Ireland, meaning Bale’s wait for a first World Cup goes on.

Some big teams are also out

Algeria

Cameroon

Ghana Holland

Chile

USA
