United States has just elected its first openly gay Governor – Meet Jared Polis

In 2009 he was also made history by being the first openly gay man elected to the US congress seat in Colorado. He has been open about his sexuality while on the campaign trail, particularly as it highlighted differences between him and the Trump administration.

During his gubernatorial bid, polis pushed for Universal health care, free early childhood education and progressing Colorado to a 100% renewable energy state.

Polis and his partner, Marlon Reis, have two kids a boy and a girl but declined to comment on whether it was a surrogate pregnancy or adoption.

Ironically, Colorado in the past has been dubbed the hate state due to high rate of racism, anti-Semitism and homophobia.  In 1992, Colorado voters approved Initiative 2 – a move that made it illegal for the LGBT community to seek protections as a minority.

It was a state that had a high level of racism, homophobia. In 1998 a gay man Matthew Shepard was brutally tortured, tied to a stake in a cold night and left to die in Colorado. It was a brutal hate crime that shocked America and kicked started legislation to protect the rights of gay people in the country

The case of the American baker who refused to make a cake for a gay couple happened in Colorado. A controversial legal tussle that went all the way to the Supreme Court who finally took sides with the baker.

Today in Colorado the State is re writing history. An openly gay man has been elected the State Governor.
