Nigerian artists that can truly sing: Our top 7 countdown

Its six days post headies, but we still cant stop arguing about who should have won.

Nigerian music plays by a different set of rules. 1)Give us some good beats, something we can dance to- maybe Johnny by  Yemi Alade. 2) Just Rhyme, even if it does not make sense (Cause, my guys call me Cristiano….Mr Ronaldo…Omo Nintendo) ..Davido’s  fall

As Nigerians rock to songs like Harry’s Samakwe and Davido’s Assurance, beautiful voices and true creativity from the likes of Brymoh and Johnny Brille are drowning in the background

Below is our Top 7 countdown of artist in Nigeria that can actually sing

Bubbling under 7

Banky has a such a gentle vocals it can almost pass for a woman’s voice and I don’t mean it in a bad way . The EME boss needs no introduction, his label discovered and made the likes of wiz-kid and Skales.

Banky has stayed true to his place as an R & B singer, but his biggest hits are those that have a touch of afropop and street vibes like  Jaiye Orimi & Gidi love . He was nominated for best R & B song and best recording at the headies awards

7 Praiz: :

He gets a nod over Banky W because of his strong pitch. not convinced? then listen to his smash hit single folashade

(wait did i say smash hit) it has only 175,000 views on you-tube, but assurance has over 2 million views.(We obviously dont care much for soul music) Headies got it right with Praiz anyways. He won the award for Best Male Performance.The Singer during his acceptance speech dedicated his award to late Singer Eric Arubayi whom he described as his very good friend. Praiz is signed to X3M record label along with  Simi

6 Omawumi ;

She is a vocal powerhouse that can easily be missed because of her genre of music. she sang smash hits like Bottom belle and if you ask me . these song enjoyed commercial success because it had great rhythm and easy to relate slangs.

The song that won her a headies award for best vocals has barely 50,000 views on You tube. It was a soulful music that only a big voice like hers could pull  off.  She delivered it so well even Whitney Houston would turn in her grave. (watch )

5) Brymoh;

Anyone that had doubts about his vocal abilities just needs to listen to his latest hit track Heya! His voice is high pitched with rich baritone that is can only belong to Brymoh.

He has claimed to be the greatest musician alive in Nigeria during an interview with pulse online, on another separate occasion he claimed to be the originator of alternative music (I wonder what that means really)

He signed with chocolate city in 2010 but broke his contract three years later. This lead to a series of Lawsuits that negatively impacted his career.

4) Timi Dakolo

There is something Timi does with his voice that is simply magical, but since winning idols West Africa in 2007, he has not been able to make it into the mainstream market. He has released 5 beautiful singles and one album; but he is barley the rave of the moment.

Throughout his entire career, he has only gotten one hip hop award nomination and not one single win (Baba God, please pick up the call). At least he is now a judge in the voice Nigeria

3) Chidimma AKA Mrs Kedike

A crystal clear voice such as hers should make it to the top three. Its not surprising since she emerged into the limelight after beating hundreds of other contestants in project fame west Africa.

Some of her careers highs include being the first female musician to peak at number 1 on the MTV base Official Naija Top 10 chart with her hit single Emi ni baller. She  has also won Kora awards best African act.

2) Simi

Simi is our number two because she has pitch, range and a clear voice  that is delivered so effortlessly.

She successfully fused popular Naija lingo into her  R& B music making her a breakout success . Nigerians can relate with her language & style. “I go shoot my shot o”. Baby call me later. “take jalopi block mercedes benz”

Like Wiz-kid she grew up in Ojuelegba. She is a graduate of Covenant University; She started her career as a gospel singer. Simi was one of the biggest winners of the headies night taking home awards for the Best R&B Single, Best Recording of the Year and Album of the Year.

1 Funbi

This guy needs a solid label to sign him up and push into mainstream, he is a vocal powerhouse. This Lagos based musician is an aspiring Architect, but music is his first love. He is learning to play the guitar. He told the guardian during an interview that he does not share his fried plantain

Missed the countdown just by the whiskers-

Johnny Brille – Because praiz is better.

Dare art Alade- Cos we have not heard from him in a long time

Tiwa savage and Asa  – Because their voice barley pitch up

Yemi alade and Waje = because their genre of music does not display their vocal prowess
