- Create a new category ! At least that’s what Chierika Ukogun did. she did not go for the popular and over populated sports with loads of competition and big names like tracks & field, soccer or weightlifting but she chose to row row row her boat ! ( yep women single sculls. boat rowing)
- Get self trained and self funded: Chierika Ukogu contacted the Nigerian Olympic Committee, asking to represent the country in Rio in 2016 in a rowing event. There was no response, not deterred she got coaching and began training hard, until her stroke got smoother and faster. She has financed her training, travel, and other costs, first with a full-time job, then a GoFundMe page and sales of T-shirts she designed.
- Win the Qualifiers : Unlike our under 20 football team, Chierika Ukogun proved herself an Olympian with a third-place finish in the FISA African Qualification Regatta, defeating a well-respected Egyptian rower to make history as the nation’s first woman to compete in an Olympic rowing event.
- Have a plan in case in you dont get a medal: (just saying)Chierika who is a dual citizen of Nigeria and the US Ukogun is also a freshman the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
