THE STORY:

He slumped while playing five-a-side match with fellow participants at the ongoing retreat of members of the state executive council and permanent secretaries at the Jubilee Chalets, Epe, the state’s commissioner for information Kehinde Bamigbetan said in a statement.

Bamigbetan said doctors and nurses rushed to give him first aid and he was immediately taken to the General Hospital, Epe where he was confirmed dead

As condolence messages pour in from all corners, questions are also pouring in. what could have happened to a man who appeared hale and hearty before the games kicked off?

MOST LIKELY VERDICT

Only the autopsy that reveal what exactly went wrong, but all indications point to SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST.

It’s a condition in which the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating. If this happens, blood stops flowing to the brain and other vital organs. It usually causes death if it’s not treated within minutes…. (National heart, lungs and blood institute) https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health-topics/sudden-cardiac-arrest

HOW DOES EXERCISE AND INTENSE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY CAUSE SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST?

Regular physical activity and exercises clearly reduces the risk of acquiring heart diseases, but if you already have a heart condition (sometimes unknown to you) intense physical workouts can elevate the risk of a cardiac arrest

Dr. Aaron L. Baggish, associate director Massachusetts General Hospital

80% OF SUDDEN DEATHS IN SPORT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY  HAVE BEEN LINKED TO A HEART DISEASE CALLED   CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE…and most of the victims are unaware they have it –sports science. Org, NCBI, Mayo clinic

READ MAYOCLINIC REPORT FOR MORE DETAILS .Coronary artery disease is usually caused by a build-up of fatty deposits (atheroma) on the walls of the arteries around the heart. Because the arteries are blocked by fat, blood finds it hard to flow through into the heart. Sometimes the fat blockage is so little we may not realise we have a heart condition. But when the fat blocking the heart arteries gets thicker, blood finds it difficult to pass through. It causes chest pain.

Coronary artery diseases is non-life threatening if managed well and can be healed with the right medication, moderate exercise and good diet. But it’s also a heart disease that can expose you to sudden death if you perform intense strenuous exercise.

SUDDEN DEATH IN SPORT DUE TO CORONARY HEART DISEASE? WHO IS AT RISK?

Most common cause in older athletes, (>35 or 40 years)

In general, SCD with exercise is more common in males. It’s three to four times more likely to happen in men than women

Sports participants who are not regularly active (leisure athlete)

People who smoke, have high cholesterol through unhealthy diets

People who have High blood pressure and diabetes

A FEW COPYCAT CASES:  OLDER MEN, ABOVE 35 WITH SUDDEN DEATH DURING INTENSE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Isaac Hayes

Hayes was discovered by his fourth wife Adjowa and young son Nana Kwadjo after they returned from a shopping trip. He was discovered him lying next to a treadmill in a basement room at his home in Memphis Tennessee. The treadmill was running but he was lying next to it unresponsive

Sheriff’s deputies performed CPR until paramedics arrived. He was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead an hour later.

David Goldberg, the CEO of Survey Monkey and husband to Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg;

He fell of a treadmill at a Mexican resort after a heart attack at a gym in a resort Punta Mita near Puerto Vallarta while on a trip with family and friends.

Initial reports by Local investigators say it was the result of head trauma after he apparently fell off a treadmill. But CBS News has learned that autopsy results suggest Goldberg had a heart arrhythmia that may have contributed to his death, reports CBSN’s Elaine Quijano.
