A new queen on the Tennis Court! Long may she Reign

Or maybe not because am such a huge fan of Serena. But she has been dethroned by Germany’s Angelique Kerber as world number one in imperious style battle against Czech Karolina Pliskova 6-3 4-6 6-4 to win the U.S. Open final on Saturday.

Her battle for the throne was long, hard full of determination and patience.

It started from the top 100…

In 2007, she won titles in a few small leagues and made top 100. She qualified to play the big leagues: French open, Wimbledon, the US open, but after 5years and 13 tournaments she only got to second round three times.

In 2011, she was so frustrated she contemplated retiring, then she changed her game from physical workouts to a change of diet, She was determined to win.

In 2011, she arrived as world’s number 92…

To New York for the US open and made a most unexpected run to the semifinals before losing to the eventual champion, Sam Stosur, in three sets.  The world now knew her name. She was world’s number 34

2012 was her breakthrough year…

Kerber then solidified her place as one of the world’s best players with her first WTA victory in Paris, followed by another in Copenhagen, at Wimbledon kerber made semifinals and in Cincinnati she enjoyed her first victory over Serena Williams. She also won a title in Linz. She was now one of the top 5 players in the world…

Some defeats, upsets, change of coaches, in and out of the top 10 till 2016…

Gerber was back with a big win, Angelique Kerber became the first German since Steffi Graf to win a grand slam title beating Serena at the Australian Open. At Wimbledon she came Second. Snagged a silver at the Olympics. And won the championship in US open.

Now she upsets Serena’s Kingdom

and seats on her throne. How long would she last? We are yet to find out but right now she is the hottest female in the tennis court.
